Making an Explosion Effect

Materials needed:

Fiber Fill (those found in stuffed toys)

LEDs

Button cell battery (CR2032)

a couple of strong little magnets

some paint

To begin, measure the amount of fiber fill needed for your desired effect, here I just painted it yellow and black. There are several techniques out there on how to shape the fiber fill, some use hair spray. I think the paint I used was good enough to stiffen the material. I wanted to depict another small gundam (astray red frame) went through the huge psycho gundam. Shown here is the back portion of the huge gundam.

Hot glued the magnets on the inside part where the battery would mount.

Make sure you tape the LEDs on the button cell. I did use ordinary clear tape during the competition proper. This is also known on the internet as a “throwie”. It’s where I actually got the idea since I’m not good at wiring LEDs. Plus of course the fact that having individual power sources for each LED would assure longer lasting lights.

The batteries would easily attach to the magnets. On this project, I used a total of four individual LEDs.

The battery lasted about 48 hours.

HG Astray Red Frame WIP

This is for the GBWC 2011 :D

The two parts of this torso is a nightmare for masking as well as the leg parts. Here are some pre paint mods done for easy slide on of parts once painted. Sorry for the poor quality pics, my cam is still busted.

cut off all pegs on lower part (encircled)

the L markings on the red part were filed down to accommodate those on the grey part

The back wing scrapes with the red part as you slide it in, nothing a bit of sanding can't handle. The front redpart is quite tricky to pull out, you have to poke it from the back using your xacto or a pin.

This is my first finished kit for the year 2011. Joined the Mechapinoy in-house competition and managed to land 3rd place.

Done two major things I have not done on any of my builds before. First was the installation of LED

Hollowed out the head

Sanded the LED to fit the visor

Ran the wiring

Test Fit. New discovery using magnets as terminals.

Primed the kit

Second thing I tried with this build is the color modulation

Applied black on areas where shadows fall on an overhead light source.

Did this throughout the whole kit.

The outcome was not that obvious though. But I'm pleased with the results nonetheless.

This was taken in Hong Kong on December 25, 2010 at the Avenue of the Stars right after watching the amazing light show of the high rise buildings in the background. This is located at the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. I represented the Philippines for the Gundam World Cup held at the Gundam Expo at Metropolis Mall in Hong Kong. Had the chance to meet the top modelers of other countries as well. This is one of the best vacation spot for me because of the bargain Gundams at the Expo and in the Mong Kok area.

II- The contest is open to all Gundam enthusiasts except employees of Bankee Trading Inc. their advertising and PR agencies, including their relatives up to second degree of consanguinity or affinity.

III- The contest has two (2) major categories :

• PROFESSIONAL:

V- Interested participants can paint, remodel, modify, or create a diorama using Bandai official Gundam model kits including SD/BB. All participants may pass their entry either in DIORAMA or SOLID MODEL KIT form. Maximum size of entry is L50cm X W50cm X D50cm. MAXIMUM OF THREE ENTRIES PER PARTICIPANT IS ALLOWED.

VI- Entry form(flyer) will be available at the following:

All participants are required to fill up an Entry Form and send us a scan copy at marketing@bankee.com.ph from October 1 to November 10, 2010. Registration number will be provided after the confirmation of entry has made.

VII- Participants should submit their ACTUAL ENTRY for exhibit on November 5 (11am to 8pm) and November 6, 2010 until 5pm at Eastwood, Libis Quezon City. Participants are required to present original Gundam kit boxes for authentication purposes. All entries must not have been used or submitted in any local or international competition. Upon submission of entry, applicants are required to sign a certification form that the entry was made by the applicant himself/herself. Participants shall be provided a copy of entry form to be presented during the judging and claiming of entries.

VIII- Winners will be determined by a panel of judges; judging will start at 2pm on November 7, 2010 at Eastwood Mall Atrium, Libis Quezon City, with a presence of a DTI Representative. Announcement of winners and awarding ceremony will be on the same day after the judging of entries. All participants are encouraged to attend the judging and awarding ceremony, in which all entries can be claimed after the ceremony. In claiming the entries, participants should present a valid ID and a copy of entry form. In a case were the owner/maker of the entry is not available to claim his/her entries and/or prizes, an authorization letter, copy of entry form and a valid ID should be presented before the organizer shall release the entries and/or prizes and being claimed. If entries and/or prizes are not claimed after the announcement of winners, participants will be notified through registered mail. Unclaimed entries and/or prizes can be claimed at the Marketing Department of Bankee Trading Inc. Head Office #6 Rest Haven St. SFDM Quezon City; a valid ID and a copy of the entry form is a must to claim the entries and/ or prizes.

- Prizes are transferable but not convertible to cash or in any other form.
- Unclaimed prizes and/or entries within (60) days from notification shall be forfeited in favor of Bankee Trading Inc. with prior approval from DTI. Grand prize winners from Professional category must bring their actual entry and should secure travel documents (one month prior to the actual date of competition in Hong Kong); other related expenses shall be shouldered by the winners. These are the 3 types of nozzles I got from ebay.
Number 1 makes a wider round mist than the default.
Number 2 makes a thin vertical, wide horizontal (like a fan).
Number 3 makes a detailed line but overspraying is a guarantee.
Got these about 2 years ago. Since it can't fit our local industrial spray cans,

How to Make a Water Diorama on a Budget

As the title would have it, this water effect was achieved more or less under US$10. This is how I made the water diorama that won the BEST in CREATIVITY and MODIFICATION award in a 2008 Gundam modeling competition. Here are the steps.

Materials

Styrofoam board
2 liter PET bottle (optional, for dramatic indentation on water)
Clear folder (also optional for the super splash effect)
Transparent Silicon (the cheapest one you can find in hardware stores)
Paints/ spoon / fork
Photo reference

Mark desired shape on the PET bottle.

Cut and make sure you give allowance for further cutting or fitting later

Trace the shape onto the styrofoam board, cut and make adjustments for the height of the indentation.

Paint the bottom side. I used only industrial spray cans (Pylox) for all my painting needs, yes, including my kits. Pencil the water patterns heavily so that you will have a guide later when applying the silicon

Get a scrap clear folder. Draw on paper the pattern you want for the splash. Trace and cut onto the folder. Make two of these.

Check the angle and adjust to desired effect.

Remove splash pattern. Spray on sea blue and dark green with any pattern. You may also consider adding dark blue. Be careful when applying these types of paints, they eat away the styrofoam. Allow paint to dry for two hours.

Pin the splash effect permanently.

Apply the silicon. Make sure to have your spoon and fork ready as the silicon sets in 10 minutes, more or less. Use toothpick to create the froth of the water under and outside the splash. Consider the water movement when doing your froth. For the inside of the indentation, use spoon for smooth water effect.

Nice Accident

Notice the trailing edge from the end of the indentation, the styrofoam was eaten away by the paint. I brushed (decanted sea blue) onto it, which gave it a really nice effect! First I almost panicked, but seeing the paint eating the styrofoam made me realize, “yeah, I need that effect!”

For this project, I built up the small splash for the leg of the owned union flag (lower right).

For the rest of the area of the water, I used spoon and used only short arching stroke all through out. Dry brushed the froth and the splash with quick drying enamel.

One mistake I made was applying the silicon indoors. It left me a bit nauseous. I would advice strongly that you do this in open air.

And there you have it. I know you guys can pick up on this and make way better water effect.

Owning a Cat

They say you don't own at cat, it owns you! Same is true with our cat, Whitey. Very aloof and never lets us hold or pet him. One day, I caught him off guard while he was having lunch. And you know what I did?

I OWNED HIM BIG TIME!!!
I gave him a makeover. LOL

We laughed so hard that day, we got exhausted.

Bangui Bay

I have no idea how beautiful the place is. Only my sister, my son and his cousin went to Ilocos this summer of 2009. Part of a university trip where my sister teaches. I can only tell through his eyes that it was THAT lovely a place when he came back. The rave in his stories about it. Plus of course, the souvenir pictures tells the rest.

One amazing thing about those windmills were its size. Unfathomable, says my son. And I just stare at the pictures and imagine.

I'm glad my son had this experience.
